New Men Fossils come into View0Scientists at the Witwatersrand University in South Africa have recently announced that they discovered a new human-like species, “Homo naledi.” They created the name based on the name of the cave where the fossilized bones were found. The scientists excavated about 1,500 fossils in an underground cave in the city of Johannesburg in 2013 and 2014.
Professor Lee Berger, who led the science team, said, “We detected a new species which belongs to genus Homo. And this is noteworthy.” He added that this new species could have lived in Africa three million years ago. He explained that Homo naledi could be a “bridge” between primitive humans and today’s humans.
New Men Fossils come into View2According to the science team, Homo naledi had a smaller skull, smaller brain cavity, and skinnier body in comparison to modern-day humans. However, the hands, feet, and small teeth of Homo naledi resemble those of ours. So, scientists think that those fossils showcase a mixture of primitive and contemporary humans’ characteristics.
